Fitness and nutrition should be a right — not a privilege.

We provide science-based fitness and nutrition programming to economically disadvantaged individuals of all abilities across Rochester and Monroe County.

The need in our community

A health crisis that hits hardest where resources are thinnest

Physical activity and healthy nutrition are proven to prevent and manage chronic disease. Yet the people who would benefit most too often lack access to either.

Who we are

Grassroots wellness, built with the community — not just for it

The Fitness Initiative is a start-up nonprofit working to address health inequity at the grassroots level. Our mission is to initiate positive, meaningful change by empowering economically disadvantaged individuals of all abilities with the foundational knowledge of healthy nutrition and an active lifestyle.

Building a foundational understanding of healthy behaviors can change the trajectory of a person's life. We deliver that foundation to individuals and families, in partnership with the community organizations they already trust.

Cooking with Exercise

Moving, nourishing, and belonging — together. In partnership with the Rochester Parkinson's Network, participants stretch, balance, and cook a healthy meal from scratch in a single welcoming session. They leave with a recipe, a container of food, and each other's phone numbers.

Designed hand-in-hand with people living with Parkinson's disease, it closes three gaps at once: accessible adaptive exercise, hands-on nutrition, and the connection that counters isolation.

Stronger together

We believe in collaboration, not duplication

We partner with other Rochester and Monroe County nonprofits and community groups that already have engaged participants — bringing the fitness-and-nutrition piece to fill the base of a bigger picture of wellbeing.

For funders, that means efficient, measurable reach into vulnerable populations through trusted, on-the-ground partners — and a program model shaped by the very people it serves.
